Growing a Greener Future: The Annual Tree Planting Day at Zespół Szkół nr 6 in Wrocław

Ott 22, 2026

As part of its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, Zespół Szkół nr 6 in Wrocław has introduced a permanent ecological initiative – an annual Tree Planting Day. The event has become an important part of school life and a practical example of how sustainability can be embedded into everyday school culture.

The initiative was launched by the School Headteacher, Marcin Królikowski, who recognised that environmental education should go beyond classroom lessons and become a real-life experience for students, teachers and the wider school community.

From a single event to a lasting school tradition

The Tree Planting Day was initially introduced as a practical environmental activity, but it has gradually developed into a recurring annual school tradition. Every year, students and staff take part in planting trees and caring for the green areas around the school.

The event combines environmental action with education. Students learn that sustainability is not only about understanding environmental challenges but also about taking responsibility and making tangible changes in their local environment.

The initiative reflects the GATE whole-school approach, particularly the areas of Campus Management, Curriculum & Pedagogy, Student Engagement and Community Engagement. The activity demonstrates that even a relatively simple action can become a permanent element of school development when it is supported by school leadership and the whole community.

Why planting trees matters

Trees provide a wide range of environmental benefits. By increasing the number of trees and other plants around the school, Zespół Szkół nr 6 contributes to improving the quality of its local environment.

Trees:

  • absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and store carbon in their biomass;
  • produce oxygen through photosynthesis;
  • help improve local air quality by capturing certain pollutants and particulate matter;
  • provide shade and help reduce the impact of high temperatures;
  • contribute to cooling the immediate surroundings through evapotranspiration;
  • support biodiversity by providing habitats and food for birds, insects and other organisms;
  • help retain rainwater and reduce surface water runoff;
  • protect and improve soil quality;
  • create greener, healthier and more pleasant spaces for students and staff.

The environmental impact of the initiative therefore goes beyond the trees themselves. Over time, the growing trees become a living environmental asset of the school, providing benefits year after year.

Learning through action

One of the most important aspects of the initiative is its educational value. Students are not only told about climate change, biodiversity or environmental protection – they are given the opportunity to act.

Planting a tree creates a direct connection between the student and the environment. A tree planted today can remain in the school environment for decades. Students can observe its growth and understand that environmental responsibility requires a long-term perspective.

The initiative therefore supports the development of several GreenComp competences, including:

  • Valuing sustainability – recognising the importance of nature and environmental resources;
  • Supporting fairness – understanding that environmental responsibility also concerns future generations;
  • Embracing complexity in sustainability – seeing the connections between climate, biodiversity, urban space and human wellbeing;
  • Acting for sustainability – taking concrete action rather than limiting sustainability to theoretical knowledge.

Building a culture of sustainability

The annual Tree Planting Day also has an important social dimension. It brings together students, teachers and school leadership around a shared goal. The activity encourages cooperation, responsibility and a sense of belonging to the school community.

For Zespół Szkół nr 6, sustainability is therefore becoming more than a project or a temporary campaign. It is gradually becoming part of the school culture and identity.

The initiative also demonstrates an important principle of the GATE project: sustainable development becomes more effective when it is embedded into school routines and management rather than treated as an isolated activity.

A small action with a long-term impact

The annual Tree Planting Day is a relatively simple initiative, but its potential impact is long-term. Every new tree contributes to a greener school environment, supports local biodiversity and creates additional ecological value.

At the same time, the initiative plants something equally important in the minds of young people – the understanding that individual and collective actions can make a difference.

The trees planted by successive generations of students will become a visible symbol of the school’s commitment to sustainability. They will remind the school community that environmental responsibility is not a one-day event, but a continuous process.

Looking towards the future

Zespół Szkół nr 6 intends to continue the Tree Planting Day as a permanent element of its annual school calendar. In the future, the initiative can be further developed through activities such as monitoring the growth of planted trees, identifying local species, creating biodiversity areas, collecting rainwater or involving students in measuring the environmental benefits of the school’s green spaces.

In this way, a simple annual ceremony can evolve into a broader whole-school sustainability programme, connecting environmental education, school management, student participation and community engagement.
