Growing Sustainability Through Hydroponics:
A GATE-Inspired Initiative at Santo André Secondary School – Barreiro, Portugal
One of the key objectives of the GATE (Green Assessment for Transformative Education) project is to empower schools to become active agents of sustainability by integrating environmental awareness into everyday learning experiences. At Santo André Secondary School, a partner institution in the GATE project, this vision has inspired an innovative hydroponics initiative that brings together science, sustainability, and student engagement.
The project is being developed by 10th and 11th grade students under the guidance of a Physics and Chemistry teacher. Through the creation and maintenance of a hydroponic growing system, students are exploring alternative methods of food production while applying scientific knowledge in a practical and meaningful way.
Hydroponics is a cultivation technique that allows plants to grow without soil, using nutrient-rich water solutions instead. This method offers several environmental advantages. It requires significantly less water than conventional agriculture, makes efficient use of available space, and reduces the need for pesticides and herbicides. As concerns about climate change, food security, and resource management continue to grow, hydroponics is increasingly recognised as a sustainable solution for the future.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the hydroponics project serves as a powerful educational tool. Students develop scientific, technical, and problem-solving skills while gaining a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. The initiative encourages them to think critically about the challenges facing our planet and to explore innovative ways of addressing them.
Most importantly, this project reflects the transformative educational approach promoted by GATE. By connecting classroom learning with real-world environmental action, students become active participants in the transition towards a more sustainable society. They are not only learning about sustainability—they are experiencing it firsthand and contributing to it through their own work.
A particularly rewarding moment of the project came when the students harvested some of the vegetables grown through the hydroponic system and used them to prepare a soup. The soup was later served and enjoyed in the school cafeteria, allowing students to experience the complete journey from cultivation to consumption. This activity not only highlighted the quality and freshness of locally grown produce but also reinforced the importance of sustainable food production and responsible consumption. By tasting the results of their own work, students gained a deeper appreciation of the connection between agriculture, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.
The hydroponics initiative at Santo André Secondary School demonstrates how the principles of GATE can be translated into meaningful educational practices. It highlights the potential of schools to inspire positive change and shows how students, supported by dedicated teachers, can play a crucial role in building a greener and more sustainable future.
