World Water Day at the Model Schools of Mytilene

On the occasion of World Water Day, the Model Schools of Mytilene hosted a multi-level awareness campaign this past March dedicated to the vital importance of water. The initiative aimed to mobilize the school community regarding the right to universal access to safe drinking water and the urgent need to protect our water resources.

The project was implemented in close collaboration with the Department of Environment of the University of the Aegean and the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Lesvos (DEYAL).

To engage students effectively, the action utilized practical tools and interactive methods:

  • Knowledge & Habits: Using a specially designed questionnaire and an interactive game, 107 students tested their knowledge of the city’s water supply and reflected on their daily consumption habits.
  • The Journey of Water: Experts from DEYAL presented the complete cycle of water—from its natural sources to the city’s taps—highlighting the rigorous sampling and controls that ensure its safety.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Students were introduced to the importance of environmental transparency. By scanning QR codes located on school water fountains, they can now monitor key water quality parameters in real-time.

The event concluded with a powerful symbolic gesture: students made individual commitments to actively participate in water conservation, recognizing it not just as a resource, but as a fundamental public good. By participating in the local network of public fountains, the Model Schools of Mytilene are actively fostering a more responsible management of water in daily school life.

In summary, this initiative constitutes an authentic application of the GreenComp philosophy, turning theory into practice by fostering essential competencies such as systems thinking and responsible action.

Furthermore, it fully aligns with the EU-GATE project’s vision for a “whole-school approach.” By bridging the classroom with local authorities, scientific institutions, and modern technology, the school emerges as a vibrant core of sustainability. This action prepares students to serve as active, conscious citizens, leading the way toward a successful green transition.
